Teachers help build a student business from the “ ground ” up

The McDonald County Chamber is pleased to announce the winners of the 2024 “ Education & Community Impact Award ,” presented at the 2024 Annual Banquet , at the Rockford Grange Event Center . The two outstanding co-winners — Kristy Gilgen and Sherry Lemm — are business teachers at McDonald County High School . For several years , they have been a major force in the success of the student-run coffee shop , a collaborative project between the school and the McDonald County Chamber .
Kristy and Sherry have devoted countless hours to this unique and innovative initiative , guiding students through every aspect of the project , from the “ ground ” up . They have mentored students in designing the shop ’ s interior and selecting furnishings , finishes and layout . They helped students develop menus and pricing strategies , and have trained them in making drinks , operating registers , balancing books and managing inventory — skills essential for running a successful coffee shop .
The impact of their efforts is profound . Students gain invaluable work experience , learning practical business skills that will serve them well in the future .
