McDonald County Schools : supporting the community beyond education
McDonald County R1 School District has been selected as the 2024 McDonald County Chamber ’ s “ Large Business of the Year .” Each year the Chamber has several nominees for each of the awards and selecting just one can be very difficult . In reviewing the nominations , the committee felt that the school district not only meets , but exceeds , the criteria for this prestigious award — through its unwavering commitment to the development , promotion and enhancement of the quality of life within all the McDonald County communities .
“ The school district and the McDonald County Chamber have forged a partnership that is unbeatable on many levels ,” Chamber president / CEO John Newby noted . “ While they have allowed us to utilize their facility for our annual business expo , they go far beyond just allowing us to use the facility , they are the largest active participant in the event themselves , that is a presence any Chamber would die for .”
The McDonald County R1 School District stands as the second-largest employer in the county , providing nearly 600 jobs . With those nearly 600 employees shopping locally , utilizing gas stations and contributing to the local economy in numerous ways , it goes without saying that the economic impact is quite substantial . The district is a pivotal force in local economic development . Ongoing construction projects at each campus are not only enhancing educational facilities but are also employing local subcontractors , stimulating the local economy . Upon completion , these outstanding projects will equip each community with a storm shelter , ensuring the safety of students and community members during severe weather events .
The McDonald County R1 School District is a cornerstone of community engagement , hosting numerous events throughout the year that significantly impact the McDonald County community . Whether it is sporting events , theater performances , music concerts or community dinners , the school district fosters community spirit and participation . Their community engagement doesn ’ t stop there however — the district hosts food pantries at its local school buildings , providing essential food supplies to those in need . This initiative ensures that families facing food insecurity have access to nutritious meals , reflecting the district ’ s dedication to supporting the community beyond education .
As the number one job training facility in the county , the district also plays a crucial role in workforce development . Its commitment to equipping students with essential skills and training ensures a steady stream of capable individuals ready to contribute to the local economy . They have several programs that combine their dedication , expertise and knowledge with the 2023 award winner , Crowder College .
Among the notable workforce development programs is the Student Chamber Coffee Shop , located in the Chamber office . “ It is a model that many schools , chambers and communities from throughout the entire are watching and contemplating duplicating ,” Newby pointed out . “ We cherish working with the school district and they certainly add a unique element to the entire county .”
